Preferring the natural media of stone and clay, and sometimes clay-to-bronze, Rachel works together with the stone and with the clay, choreographing each medium to achieve a finished form that beckons to be touched and caressed. While chipping away at a piece of stone she has long been communing with, she welcomes departure from the predetermined as a chip here or the natural constitution of the stone leads to introspection and reconfiguration, to follow a natural curve or rediscover a contrast.
|
While she cuts and chisels stone with sharp and precise tools in order to enhance its inner story, she contours clay by caressing its natural flatness, molding it into something new. Rachel hopes the observer will experience and re-experience nature in her personal interpretation of the finished form.

Rachel strives to “reveal and accentuate a stone’s natural grace.” Each of her works is “incomplete until such time as [she] feels as one with its refined presentation, when the superfluous has been omitted and the essential is obvious.”
